Richard Harris stars in this mediocre thriller as a whaler who gets terrorized by an Orca killer whale after killing its mate & unborn baby. I expected this to be quite a cheesy film for two reasons: It’s a PG rated horror movie and it was made in 1977. Needless to say, I was right on both counts. The title of the film could have been better too. Why not “Free Killy”? That acting is decent but nowhere near Oscar Worthy, and the story itself is quite laughable at points, but this is still quite an enjoyable movie. Somewhat suspenseful, but there is nothing to really make you jump out of your seat. But it has a lot of beautiful images of whales & is somewhat of a good way to pass the time. In this action adventure, Perseus (Sam Worthington) braves the treacherous underworld when his father Zeus (Liam Neeson) are captured by his son, Ares (Edgar Ramirez) and brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes) who unleash the ancient Titans upon the world. While the action is great in this film, it is somewhat repetitive & the CGI in this film is pretty much terrible, plus the storyline itself is very mediocre and quite a disappointment. I saw the 3D version of this movie, and while some effects are good in 3D, for the most part, the effects are almost as bad as they were in the 3D film that came out December of last year called The Darkest Hour where the 3D was nothing & should have just been left in 2D. If you are big on these type of films, you will no doubt find this enjoyable but for the most part, I would say it’s nothing special & if you do plan to see it, I say wait for DVD. Set in the future, The Hunger Games tells the story of teens Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark (Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson) who are selected to fight to the death by The Capitol from the twelve districts on live television. Having never read the books of this series, I didn’t know quite what to expect but thought this was an over all well acted film. The beginning of the film was quite slow in my opinion & the story itself was more violent than I had thought it would be. I have heard from people that the film adaptation doesn’t quite do the book justice, but points in the film can be very exciting & make you interested in what happens next. It wasn’t as good as I expected it to be, to be honest but it’s still a good way to spend 2 hours & 22 minutes. Surprisingly to me though, the film didn’t even seem that long. This isn’t a great film, but still a rather enjoyable one. :)
Titanic arises once more in this 3D version of the 1997 blockbuster. I’m pretty sure that after 15 years everyone pretty much knows the plot of the story, so this is one aspect of the review I will not bother going on & on about. What I will concentrate more on is the 3D aspect of the film & how watching this version will never make you see this movie in the same way ever again. The visuals are so incredible that it makes you feel as if you are really experiencing the sinking of the ship along with everyone aboard that ship. It feels even more real to those who see it in IMAX 3D like I was able to yesterday. You feel the fear & the loss that these people had to go through on that fateful voyage of 1912. Plus, even though the love story between Jack & Rose is fictional, watching this version makes you feel like you are truly experiencing everything they are going through, good & bad. I have been a fan of this film ever since watching it in 1997 when it was released but as I said before, seeing it in 3D makes you look at it in an entirely different way. I strongly suggest you experience this if you can. From what I hear, it won’t be available in 3D long, so board this ship while you can & get ready for the experience of a lifetime. In this comedy-drama, Eddie Murphy plays smooth talking literary agent Jack MCcall, who will tell anyone anything to get what he wants. Well, after lying to a spiritual guru about having his book published, Jack finds a magical tree in his yard & finds out that he is somehow connected to it & with every word he speaks, a leaf falls off leading both him & the tree to death. I will admit that I had my doubts about this one because most of Eddie Murphy’s work is just plain silly if you ask me, but this is a very enjoyable movie that actually has a point behind the comedy & the story. Eddie Murphy does a terrific job as a man trying to express himself without words. Some moments of this film are NOT family oriented though, so parents should be warned that this not that “Daddy Day Care” type of film. However, as I said it is a great comedy & great story. Even if you are not a big fan of most of Murphy’s work, as I certainly am not, I think you will be pleasantly surprised & enjoy yourselves with this one. Rated PG-13. *Poster From Rotten Tomatoes*.
This sci-fi drama centers around three high school friends who make a weird discovery one evening during a party & gain super powers. Soon they find their lives spinning out of control as they find these powers harder to control. This is a very well acted drama with amazing special effects. It really doesn’t have much going for it as much as plot is concerned but the story is still very good a lot of action to keep you on the edge of your seat with stunts & other effects that you have to see to believe. This story manages to fit sci-fi, drama & action all into one movie without over doing it. This is unlike any movie I have ever seen before and one that I highly recommend & would call the best movie of 2012 so far. It’s sure a major step up from the utterly horrible sci-fi movie “The Darkest Hour” and I would urge all lovers of sci-fi to go see it. You will not be disappointed in anyway. Rated PG-13. *Poster From Rotten Tomatoes*
In this remarkable true story that is a lot of fun, Leonardo Dicaprio stars a Frank Abagnale Jr, a young con artist that was successfully able to pass himself off as a pilot, lawyer & doctor all before hitting the age of 21. Tom Hanks stars as a member of the FBI who joins Frank in a game of cat & mouse (and even gets conned himself) while attempting to track him down. What makes this film so remarkable is seeing all this young man was able to accomplish & get away with at such a young age. Dicaprio does a tremendous job playing him & I would say this is probably his best performance since “Titanic” in 1997. Hanks does a fine job as well as FBI Agent Carl Hanratty. Steven Spielberg directs this film as well, so if you are a movie lover I suggest you catch this if you can…(no pun intended)..ok, maybe a little.
Rated PG-13
Edward Cullen & Bella Swan (Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart) return in this latest installment of the Twilight series where they wed & expect a child. The child though will be half vampire, half human which could cause some trouble for Bella. Now, I have never been a fan of any of the previous Twilight films, & while this one does have it’s moments of sappiness & corniness, I found it to actually be a much better story than any of its predecessors and enjoyed it. This one actually involves some good action in it as well as far as Jacob (Taylor Lautner) is concerned. I don’t recommend this one highly, but I still recommend it. Even if you weren’t a fan of the previous films like me, you may be pleasantly surprised by this one. Like I said, it does have its slow and corny moments, but in the end I found it worth it. You will too if you give it a chance. Rated PG-13 *Poster From Rotten Tomatoes*
James Brolin stars as a small town sheriff that must find out who or what is behind the wheel of a black car that mysteriously is going around killing people.
Now, with this being a 70′s PG rated film, you can imagine how horrifying the script really is & how cheesy the acting is. And it is. The story is weak, they never really figure out how or why the car itself has been possessed. This is nowhere near as good as I thought it was going to be & you can even tell this film has a real 70′s feel to it by the mediocre scares right down to the outfits they all wear. This film is so cheesy, it’s a downright laughable horror film. Plus, being rated PG, I’m not even sure if should even be considered a horror movie. I would stay away this one & take a look at 1983′s “Christine” if you want to experience a more chilling car ride. Rated PG. *Poster From Rotten Tomatoes*
Kermit and the gang are back in the all new adventure as they try to save thier old studio from someone who wants to tear it down. Jason Segel (TV’s How I Met Your Mother) stars as Gary, who goes to help Kermit and his friends reunite & put on a show to save the studio. This is a better film than I expected it to be & has some very good performances & cameos, along with some fun musical numbers. What really surprised me about this film was that a lot of the character voices sound exactly like they did when Jim Henson did them back in the day. Adults will have as much fun at this film as kids will, as it is sure to bring back memories of the old Muppet Show days for them. It is a really fun film for the whole family that is sure to make you smile from beginning to end. Rated PG.
